เทคโนโลยี Dual Pixel CMOS AF ที่พัฒนาขึ้นมาใหม่ เป็นครั้งแรก Dual Pixel CMOS AF คือการใช้เซ็นเซอร์รับภาพ เป็นตัวโฟกัสภาพ จะว่าไปจริงๆ การนำเอาเซ็นเซอร์ ที่เดิมไว้ใช้ถ่ายภาพ มาทำหน้าที่ในการโฟกัสภาพนั้น ไม่ใช่เรื่องใหม่เสียทีเดียว มีมาได้สักพักแล้ว ในชื่อที่เรียกว่า Hybrid AF ซึ่ง Hybrid AF ใช้แค่พื้นที่ส่วนเล็กๆในภาพ ใช้งานพิกเซลในการทำงาน จับสัญญาน Phase detection เพื่อช่วยโฟกัสอย่างรวดเร็ว (ในเบื้องต้น) แล้วขั้นปลายจึงใช้ Contrast detection มาปรับในขั้นตอนสุดท้าย ให้โฟกัส "เข้าเป้า" การทำงานร่วมกันของสองระบบนี้ ที่เรียกกันในตอนแรกว่าเป็น Hybrid AF (ออโต้โฟกัสแบบ ผสมผสาน ระหว่าง Phase detection กับ Contrast detection ใช้สองอย่างช่วยกันโฟกัส) นั่นคือ สิ่งที่มีอยู่แล้วในปัจจุบัน ในกล้องหลายรุ่น หลายๆ ยี่ห้อทำกัน 


แต่สิ่งที่ Canon ทำให้กับกล้อง Canon EOS 70D นั้น ต้องเรียกได้ว่าเป็น การปฏิวัติรูปแบบการทำงาน ของการโฟกัสภาพด้วยเซ็นเซอร์รับภาพ ก็คือ ทาง Canon ไม่ได้ใช้งานในลักษณะผสมผสาน หรือ Hybrid อีกต่อไป แต่เป็นการทำงานในแบบ Phase detection ล้วนๆ ที่ Canon เรียกว่า Dual Pixel CMOS AF ดังนั้น Dual Pixel CMOS AF จึง ไม่ใช่ระบบโฟกัสแบบ Hybrid AF แต่เป็นสิ่งใหม่ เป็น Phase detection ล้วนๆ ที่ต้องเรียกว่า ครั้งแรกในโลก ตามคำกล่าวอ้างของ Canon เอง ก็คงต้องเชื่อเขาหน่อย ในประเด็นนี้ เพราะเท่าที่ผมเคยใช้งานกล้องมา ก็ยังไม่เคยเจออะไรแบบนี้เหมือนกัน เป็นครั้งแรกของผม ก็น่าจะจริงอย่างที่ Canon เขาว่า "ครั้งแรกของโลก" ก็ ตามนั้นครับ ^ ^
